Hello,
As this is the first post of the year let me begin by saying that I am very excited!  The material that we cover this year is very important and sets the foundation for each of the student's individual successes throughout their high school career.  There will be three specific skills that we will be focusing on throughout this year: reading, writing, and speaking.  Each of these skills will be addressed both consecutively and at various times throughout the year through many of the different units.

As for this particular unit, Of Mice and Men and "The American Dream," our objectives will be fourfold.
The students will:
  1. Read, understand, and remember the narrative, structure, and key literary elements from the novel Of Mice and Men.
  2. Learn how themes are woven into the fabric of prose by identifying and analyzing the themes within the novel.
  3. Learn how the problems faced by fictional characters can translate to real-life situations-i.e. they are relevant to readers both then and now.
  4. Learn how to use formulaic writing to discuss and make claims about a topic.
To accomplish these goals we will be reading the novel, participating in class discussions, and writing both formal and informal texts about the narrative and themes in the novel.  Additionally, we will be doing a research project towards the end of the unit.

The duration of the unit will be largely contingent upon how well we are doing at accomplishing these goals, but it should be completed by Christmas
break.  You can check out the calendar that has been posted by clicking on the "Calendar" tab at the top of this page.  In order to ensure the students have every chance of staying on top of their work, I have also made the image of the book (above and to the left) a link to an online version of the book.  This will help both the students who have forgotten or misplaced the book and any parent/guardian that wants to stay on top of what their student is doing by reading ahead or along with their student.

I look forward to going through this unit.  If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time.
Thank you,
Mr. Kain
